What is Biotin?

Biotin is part of the group of B-vitamins which also includes choline, folic acid, inositol, vitamin B-1, vitamin B-2, vitamin B-3, vitamin B-5, vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12. Biotin can be found in egg yolks, organ meats, bananas, carrots, milk, soy, salmon and barley, and is also produced by the friendly bacteria inhabiting the body.

Biotin is involved in a variety of biological processes, including the production of energy and the manufacture of fatty acids. Biotin is also involved in the metabolism of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) and researchers speculate that biotin may participate in DNA replication.

Deficiency

Biotin deficiency is rare and is characterized by unpleasant neurological and psychological symptoms. Deficiencies may occur in those with a poor diet, an inborn metabolic disorder, or even some otherwise healthy pregnant women.

Health Benefits

In addition to being necessary for good health, biotin has been shown to have other benefits. Some studies suggest that biotin may help improve glucose tolerance, which may benefit individuals with type II diabetes. Biotin has also been shown to help control “uncombable hair syndrome” in children, and to help strengthen weak nails.
