What is Astragalus?
Latin Name: Astragalus membranaceus
Other names: Milk Vetch Root, Huang-qi (Yellow Leader)
Astragalus is a yellow root that is a member of the bean family that is claimed to be a remedy for weakened immune systems and heart failure with few side effects.
Astragalus Health Benefits:
Many conditions benefit from the usage of astragalus such as: acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), burns and abscesses, chronic colds and flu, fatigue, night sweats, and loss of appetite. Astragalus helps improve stamina and energy levels. In addition, astragalus has been used in the treatment of heart failure, liver disease, and kidney ailments as well as Alzheimer's disease. There is controversy surrounding its antioxidant properties.
Astragalus Usage Indications
Astragalus comes in many forms including capsules and tablets. Recommended dosage is two or three 500 milligram pills 3 times a day.
Fluid extract: 4-12 millileters (about one half to 2 1/2 teaspoonfuls) daily.
Dried root: 2-6 grams daily.
Side effects: Gas and loose bowel movements.
Indications: Avoid combining astragalus with Coumidin or other blood thinners due to an increased risk of internal bleeding. People on immunosuppresive therapy or with autoimmune diseases such as lupus should exercise extreme caution. Do not overuse astragalus due to its large content of selenium. Overdose of astragalus can have serious side effects resulting in hair/teeth/nail loss and paralysis. It is always recommended to consult a physician before taking any supplement.
