What is Black Cohosh?
Black cohosh, or Cimicifuga racemosa, is an herb that is
said to have similar effects in the body to the female sex hormone estrogen.
Therefore, the herb is often used as a practical alternative to hormone
replacement therapy for menopausal women. Additionally, black cohosh is commonly
used to help ease the discomfort of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Health Benefits
It is supported by several research studies that black
cohosh is effective and safe for use by menopausal women in place of hormone
replacement therapy, or by women experiencing PMS. There is no evidence to
support claims that black cohosh is useful in the treatment of other conditions
such as bronchitis, joint pain or insomnia.
Usage Indications
General recommended dosage is 40mg dried black cohosh per
day. Formulations vary, so be sure to consult with the manufacturer’s suggested
dosage, as well as your physician.
Black cohosh is available in fresh/dried root, liquid, capsule and tablet form.
It is generally recommended that black cohosh not be taken for a period greater
than 6 months, except under medical supervision.
Side effects: Taken in normal dosages, stomach or intestinal pain
may sometimes occur in sensitive individuals. Extremely high doses (5 grams or
greater) may be toxic and should be treated immediately as a medical
emergency.
Indications: Pregnant/breastfeeding women should avoid this
supplement. Consult your physician before beginning the use of this and any
other dietary supplement.
